SUMMER CAMPS 2008

INDIAN CAMP(At Zoomars)
July 14th-18th | 9 AM - 1 PM

In this incredibly unique camp, taught by Juaneno Indian, Jacque Nunez, your child will celebrate culture, diversity and California’s rich heritage. Using the same techniques that the California Indians did, campers will weave baskets, create jewelry, use clapper sticks and paint on gourds and rocks. The children will take part in various Indian games and activities such as singing, dancing and storytelling, experiencing a time when people lived in harmony with Mother Earth.

Campers will explore the petting zoo, learn how rabbit fur was used and gain an appreciation of the important role that animals played in Native American culture. Indian Camp is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about the history of California, the Mission and the Gold Rush eras, in a wholesome, outdoor setting where they participate in hands-on activities including panning for gold, making arrowheads and squishing mud through their toes to make adobe bricks!

ANIMAL CAMP (At Zoomars)
July 7th-11th & August 18th-22nd (Offered Twice) | 9 AM - 1 PM

Enrich your child’s love of animals with a behind the scenes experience at ZOOMARS. Unlike the petting zoo’s visitors, campers will work side by side with the animal keepers and learn how the animals are fed, groomed and cared for. The zoo’s veterinarian will be on hand to talk to the children about animal health and the importance of good hygiene. Campers will learn about goats, sheep, emus, llamas, ducks, donkeys and pigs as well as animal-related careers.

Jacque Nunez, the camp’s director and Juaneno Indian, will share the significance of animals in the early days with songs about hummingbirds, tales of coyotes, bears and rattlesnakes, and other animal activities to stimulate your child’s imagination. Everyone will get to ride the horses and ponies as Jacque talks about their importance in days past. A special class on parrots will be taught by ZOOMARS owner, Carolyn Gonzalez. She will share her beautiful collection of rare and exotic birds and take the group inside the zoo’s aviaries. Children will learn to draw and paint animals, sing animal songs, do crazy animal dances and make interesting crafts using feathers and fur. (Of course with no animals harmed.) Animal Camp aims to enhance self-esteem, make friends and encourage respect for nature and oneself. It’s sure to be an oinking, squawking, chirping good time.
