SUMMER CAMPS 2011

NATIVE AMERICAN SUMMER CAMP AT THE MISSION
SESSION 1: June 27th - July 1st, 2011 | 9 AM - 1 PM
Journey’s to the Past educator, Jacque Nunez presents a camp that celebrates culture, diversity, and California’s heritage. Imagine journeying back in time when people lived in harmony with Mother Earth and learning about Native American cultures and lifestyles from early California.
Children will learn to be the “Keepers of the Earth” through sound environmental practices and learn skills the California Indians used before the Spanish influx like weaving a basket, making an arrowhead, drilling a shell with a pump drill, pounding yucca for string and making a gourd bowl.
SESSION 2: July 4th - July 8th, 2011 | 9 AM - 1 PM
Let your child imagine what the gold rush era was like in 1849. The mission was here, the builders of the mission were here and you’ll see everyone’s lifestyle and experience hands on FUN. The Gold Rush came and all of California was affected. Campers will pan for gold, wash clothes the ole fashion way, make an arrowhead, rope a hay stack steer, shave like a miner and view the beauty of different Native Americans along this Western movement., play with ole fashion toys, touch and feel Native American artifacts, skins, grind wheat, make a rope headband, brand a piece of wood, make beaded shell necklaces.
During the Mission Era Juaneno Indians learned how to make adobe bricks, so will your campers as they even get their feet a little muddy into some good ole fashion adobe mud making. The Juaneno Indians were basket weavers and your child will weave a basket, have an acorn hunt, and make some fry bread, yum yum! Our week will be complete with Native American dancers and fry bread. Come join the fun and have a blast to the past with Miss Jacque.
