Storyteller Jim Lewis introduces the Gold Rush era to "set the stage" before your students jump into history. Children will journey back to the days of California's Old West for an interactive experience of living history. Students will explore the Gold Rush Era and embark on a real treasure hunt by panning for gold. When the explorers get hungry, they'll learn to cook by grinding wheat, rolling dough and churning butter. Children will have an opportunity to shave with a popsicle stick, create shell necklaces and wash clothes on a scrub board, just like the old timers. Back at the petting zoo, campers will experience how animals were used in Pioneer times by making clothes from sheep's wool and testing their skill as they try to lasso a goat. They'll learn about ranching, roping and horsemanship and saddle up their ponies for a ride. Through interactive games, singing, dancing, crafts and activities, children will understand the significance that the Native Americans had on the Pioneers as they traveled the dusty trail to California.
